I have only the need to get and keep fit while enjoying leisurely rides in SA's great outdoors.

  1. What is a good starter bike?
  2. Can I go to my local supermarket and buy a < R1000 bike or is it worth spending more?
  3. How much more as I don't want to spend too much?

What ever you do, do not buy one from your local supermarket, chances are that within a couple of months, if not less, you will wish you had a better bike. Also, if there are any issues with the bike and you need to return it for repairs you are going to have to deal with someone who does not know the firs thing about a bicycle.

I would say that if you are looking just to keep fit and am not too serious about getting into cycling you should spend no more than 3500 to 4000, my assumption is that you want to buy an MTB?

Go to a bicycle shop that specializes in cycling, tell them how much you want to spend and ask them what they can do for you at that price. Raleigh and Mongoose have good fairly cheap entry level bikes.

I agree with @Endo, a supermarket bike is not the way to go. If you are not sure that you are going to enjoy cycling and just want to try it out then consider getting a second-hand bike. You can ask the seller if you can take it to a bike shop for a complete check and service before buying. This way you can get a better bike that will fit into your budget.

There are many good online classifieds but in SA you can have a look at The Hub's classified section.

Enjoy.
